What details should be included on a dog tag by law in the UK?

Owner's Name & Address

The Control of Dogs Order 1992 law outlines that ‘every dog while in a highway or in a place of public resort shall wear a collar with the name and address of the owner inscribed on the collar or on a plate or badge attached to it’.

An example of what should be engraved on a dog ID tag in the UK, and comply with the law, would be:

    Hughes

    10 Colomb St

    SE16 0NY

Or

    J Hughes

    10 Colomb St

    SE16 0NY

As most addresses are too long to be in engraved in full on a tag, abbreviating it is also acceptable & advisable.

    J Hughes

   10, SE16 0NY

Add a phone number?

Although not required by law, we would also recommend adding at least 1 contact number. This will help speed up being reunited with your pet should they get lost.

    J Hughes

    10, SE16 0NY

    07522 321456

Your Dog's Name

Unfortunately, not advisable. Dog theft is on the rise in the UK by adding your pets name it gives the thief the chance to become familiar/friendly with your dog quickly making them easier to sell.
